The Protestant Reformation
The Protestant Reformation was the period of time between 1517 and 1648 when Christians began to break away from the Roman catholic Church, this time period followed another time period known as the Renaissance, which was a time where Europeans began to be more creative and were influenced by culture. during this time, they also began to question authority, because, people began to believe that they were important. It is believed by some that the start of the Protestant Reformation began because of all the changed brought by the Renaissance. In the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, men like Martin Luther began to rebel from the Roman Orthodox church, which held power at the time, these visionaries believed that the church had become corrupt, and no longer held the interests of its Churchgoers as a priority. Martin Luther, the first person to influence the Protestant Reformation, believed that the church held money at more value than anything, because the church began to sell indulgences, which were intended to allow direct access into heaven once you died. This went against the teachings of Jesus, who was the founder of Christianity and the main focus of this website.
Martin Luther, the man mentioned above, saw the corruption of the church, and decided to post his famous 95 thesis onto a church door, these thesis were basically 95 complaints that he compiled together onto a sheet of paper. Printed copies of his thesis were spread through Germany quickly with aid from the printing press, a revolutionary new invention created in the 1400's. Once these thesis were seen by people it sparked a flame that would begin the famous Protestant Reformation. The process first began with the people uniting against the Roman Catholic Church, and eventually causing the Church to split, this split produced a new form of Christianity that was named Protestantism. This new religion held all the same basic principles about God and the only major difference is in that people no longer needed to go through a pope. In Protestantism , there is no Pope, this allows believers of the religion to connect with Jesus and his teachings without the need for another individual.Over time, Protestantism became one of the major branches of Christianity.
The main reason for breaking from the Roman Catholic Church was because of the corruption that managed to creep into the church. Martin Luther, as well as many others saw how the church had become corrupted and decided within their minds that the church no longer was preaching what Jesus, the true Leader of the religion, preached. because they saw that these teachings were not proper, they challenged that church and corrected the path of the religion and aligned it to Jesus' teachings. Jesus' teachings are everywhere in Protestantism, and the religion is still based off of what Jesus taught.
